Description:

Mobile Light Force (Gunbird (ガンバード)) is a Shooter video game published by Sony released on June 25th, 2009 for the PlayStation Network as PSOne Classic.

This is a Japanese vertical scrolling shoot ’em up, it’s real name is Gunbird (ガンバード) though the publisher (XS Games) decided to change it to “Mobile Light Force” because western countries couldn’t handle the title “Gunbird” apparently. The game features anime style characters which can fly or have some sort of device that allows them to fly, it’s a fun shooter with short levels and many clever bosses designs.

The work of XS Games deserves a paragraph for themselves because they did everything on their power to ruin the game. First they changed the title to some random crap, then made a terrible cover art that you can see above. The cover has absolutely nothing to do with the game: it’s 3 women, each of a different race (because yeah, diversity is good marketing) runnin’ and gunnin’: NONE of this happens in the game at all. Not happy with that they proceeded change the real names of the characters with those of XS Games employees! (proud of their fine work i assume?). Then removed all of the game story including the endings and since they were at it also removed the fan art gallery.

Actual game characters:

  • Ash (アッシュ): A 28-year old German man with a jet pack on his back.
  • Marion (マリオン): A cute 13-year old witch from England who flies on a broomstick.
  • Valnus (バルナス): A big robot created in Russia.
  • Yuan Nang (ヤンニャン): A strong-willed and courageous woman.
  • Tetsu (鉄): A strong, white-haired old man of 60 years.

Check the screenshots and judge by yourself, this is a fine shooter, very playable even for those who are not very skilled at bullet hell games (this isn’t it).
