“Pata-Pata-Pata-Pon!” “Pon-Pon-Pata-Pon!” “Chaka-Chaka-Pata-Pon!” these may sound annoying and repetitive but they’re actually quite catchy and addicting, especially when you’re playing a game like Patapon.

Gameplay:

Patapon stands out in its very unique gameplay which is a mix of a Rhythm game with a god game (a game in which a player takes complete control of its inhabitants. The game will provide the players with the beat they have to follow as they input commands using a series of specific sequences of buttons. Square, Square, Square, Circle is the basic command to make your little Patapon army move forward. You learn more commands the more you progress through the game. Chaining various commands successfully multiple times will enter the player into a “Fever” mode increasing the attack and defense of the Patapon. Players have the chance to upgrade their Patapon before each mission, either by making better ones or by equipping them with obtained equipment. Depending on what the Patapon’s kill during a mission, the player will receive different “Spoils of war” which range from items used to make new Patapon to better equipment.

Story:

The story is simple at first, you act out the role of the “Almighty” guiding the Patapon to recover their land from the Zigoton Empire. You use the war drums (the ones used to order the Patapon) to direct the Patapon into doing what you tell them. Without spoiling anything I will say that the story escalates at a set pace. Battles become bigger and bosses become stronger.

Graphics:

The game is set in a 2D environment; sometimes the player can use a blessing to change the environment such as summoning rain.

Overall:

This game is very unique in its gameplay and story. It’s one of my top recommended games on the PSP. I would say to not judge it until you have played it. While it might look like an easy game it actually takes quite a bit of strategy to beat it.
